BART Women’s Fellowshipwomen

At the November meeting of BART Women’s Fellowship we were pleased to welcome Tim Wyatt, a volunteer helmsman with the Gravesend lifeboat.  Many of us – thanks to some splendid recent television programmes – are fairly familiar with the work of the RNLI offshore boats, but few of us know of the vital work of the boats working along the estuaries and rivers.  Four lifeboat stations were installed on the Thames following the sinking of the pleasure steamer Marchioness by the dredger Bowbelle at 1.46am on August 20th 1989, close to Cannon Street Railway Bridge. Of the 127 passengers and four crew on board the Marchioness, 51 people drowned that night. As a result of that tragedy, RNLI lifeboats have been stationed at Gravesend’s Royal Pier since 2002. Since then the Gravesend lifeboats  have been launched 1,500 times, rescued 797 people and saved 69 lives. Mr Wyatt gave a most informative and at times very moving account of the daily life aboard a lifeboat in the 21st century. The Fellowship were pleased to be able to send a generous financial gift to the invaluable life saving work of the RNLI, which is totally funded by public donation.

Our next meeting - to be held in Ryarsh Church Hall at 2.00pm on Thursday, December 7th - will be “A Christmas Menu”.  Following a lighthearted entertainment, members will share a thought about the true meaning of  Christmas before enjoying  a celebration tea together.  All ladies are welcome to attend! Please come!
